Update| 7:15 p.m.:
Seattle police said shortly after 7 p.m. that that the viaduct has reopened to traffic.
A 61-year-old motorcyclist has died after a crash on the Alaskan Way Viaduct, authorities said Saturday evening.
The accident occurred shortly before the start of the Mariners game, causing a southbound closure of the viaduct and gridlock that extended for miles.
The state Department of Transportation switched the direction of Interstate 5 express lanes through Seattle to aid with southbound traffic flow. I-5 traffic was nearly at a standstill from downtown to Northgate but started improving by 7 p.m.
Police said the viaduct would remain closed until the crash investigation was complete.
