Foreign workers on way to Washington apple harvest

The Associated Press

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Buses with about 500 foreign workers are expected to arrive Wednesday in the Yakima and Tri-City areas to help harvest a record apple crop in Washington.

The Washington Farm Labor Association says they’ll likely be in the orchards by Friday.

The Tri-City Herald reports visas through the federal H-2A guest worker program have been delayed by State Department computer problems.

The Farm Labor Association manages the program for growers.

About 8,500 H-2A workers are expected at the peak of the harvest in Washington with about 1,500 of those workers still to come.

The association has appointments at the Tijuana, Mexico, consulate for the remainder of the workers.
