A 13-year-old girl was killed and at least two others were hospitalized after a family trying to cross Pacific Highway South in Kent was hit by a vehicle Saturday night.
A family of four was crossing in an area with no crosswalk shortly after 6 p.m. when they stepped in front of a southbound vehicle which was unable to avoid them, Kent police and fire officials said. The accident occurred in the 23400 block of Pacific Highway South, just south of the S. Kent Des Moines Road intersection.
Paramedics tried to revive of the girl but were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The father and one other family member were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and transported to a nearby hospital, Kent police said in a news release.
A Kent Fire Department official at the scene initially said a third family member also was hospitalized in the incident but the Kent police department news release made no mention of a third person. A department spokesman could not be immediately reached for clarification. The names and conditions of the family members were not released.
The driver, who was not injured, was cooperating with police. Two southbound lanes of Pacific Highway South were closed while the accident was investigated.
“The conditions of this tragic collision were made worse because the collision occurred within sight of a fully marked and controlled crosswalk,” Kent Police Commander Jarod Kasner said in the news release.
