Seattle Times Publisher Frank Blethen has received the “Leadership in Diversity Award” from the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA).
The award was announced over the weekend at the AAJA’s national convention in Washington, D.C.
In nominating Blethen for the honor, Lori Matsukawa, KING 5 news anchor and AAJA Seattle co-founder, said “Frank Blethen made diversity coverage a cornerstone for The Times.” That effort, she said, has led to “stories of diverse communities, photographs of diverse people written by reporters of color.”
Blethen also was praised for promoting diversity in hiring and promotion at The Seattle Times and its affiliate publications, and for his personal financial support of the AAJA.
AAJA, founded in 1981, is a nonprofit professional and educational organization with more than 1,600 members.
