Tuesday Memo: Saving the video store … World popcorn … S’more fire bans

Second act: Scarecrow Video, the U District store beloved by movie buffs, has found a Frank Capra solution to ongoing money problems. Employees, with a little help from the Grand Illusion Cinema, are spearheading a drive to convert the store to nonprofit status. A Kickstarter campaign begins this week.

What goes with movies? Popcorn, of course. Seattle-based KuKuRuZa popcorn has been trying to expand in the Puget Sound area, but the demand in foreign countries has been too high. The international market loves KuKuRuZa and franchises have opened around the world, including Japan and Saudi Arabia.

Dramatic skies: Thunderstorms and lightning are expected Today throughout the state, according to the National Weather Service forecast. Temperatures are expected to drop a bit from Monday’s record high of 96 degrees, but should remain in the 80s. The red-flag warning for wildfire danger remains in place.

No s’mores for you: Dry conditions have caused the Department of Natural Resources to issue a campfire ban for campgrounds across the state. The ban includes briquets, but propane flames are allowed.
