An unconscious man was hospitalized early this morning after a fire broke out inside his house in the 1800 block of South Lane Street in Seattle.
The man’s next door neighbor dialed 911 shortly before 2 a.m. to report smoke and flames coming from the man’s home; the same neighbor tried to run into the burning South Seattle home to alert his neighbor. He kicked open the door and saw his neighbor, but was not able to get inside because of the heat and flames, according to the Seattle Fire Department.
Fire crews entered the home, pulled the unconscious man to safety and began CPR. The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition, according to the Fire Department.
It took more than an hour to extinguish the fire. An investigator said the cause of the fire was improperly discarded smoking materials placed in a kitchen garbage can. The damage estimate is $100,000 to the structure and $50,000 to the contents, the Fire Department said.
