2 hit in Yakima by BNSF freight train

The Associated Press

YAKIMA — Two people have been hit by a freight train traveling on a bridge over the Naches River in north Yakima.

BNSF Railway spokesman Gus Melonas says he does not know the extent of the injuries to the man and woman or any identifying information.

The railroad shut down traffic on the route for about two hours while the people were treated and the incident investigated. Both were taken to local hospitals.

The accident happened around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday as the train was traveling from Ellensburg to Yakima carrying three cars of frozen food.

Melonas says the people were walking on the bridge but he does not know why. He says they began running when they heard the train whistle.

Melonas says the conductor put on the brakes but the people were hit near the end of the bridge.
