Evacuations ordered in new W. Oregon wildfire

GASTON, Ore.  — Fire officials say a new wildfire in a rural area west of Portland has quickly burned across an estimated 150 acres, prompting the evacuation of at least 50 homes.

At least 70 firefighters have responded. No injuries have been reported.

Gaston Rural Fire District chaplain Joel Peterson says a helicopter is fighting the blaze as well, with water retrieved from nearby Hagg Lake.

The Oregonian reports that state Forestry Department spokesman Nick Hennemann says the fire reported Friday afternoon grew from about 4 acres to more than 200 acres in an hour.

Other nearby residents have been told to be ready to leave their homes if necessary.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.

It’s burning about 25 miles west of Portland.
