The FBI and local police are searching for a 9-year-old boy who is believed to be with his father and may be in danger.
Billy Hanson is believed to be with Jeffrey Ford Hanson, 46, in a white 1976 Cooper sailboat named “Draco.”
Billy was last seen with his father on Aug. 30, according to the FBI. He had been staying with his father at Shilshole Bay Marina and was due to be returned to his mother in Pennsylvania on Sept. 4, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office on Friday morning. Billy never boarded his flight home, the release said.
The FBI started investigating this week after several Seattle and Pennsylvania police agencies were contacted and looked into the case. The parents have shared custody of Billy, said FBI spokesman Fred Gutt.
“[Jeffrey] Hanson is believed to be extremely volatile and authorities are gravely concerned about the child’s safety,” according to the release.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office claims Jeffrey Hanson “is a known drug abuser.” It’s believed he may be taking the child to the San Juan Islands, Mexico or Tahiti, the news release said.
Gutt said the Coast Guard is assisting with the investigation and has shared information about the missing boy and the sailboat with maritime traffic.
Billy is about 4 feet tall, weighs 90 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing black knee-length surf shorts with no shirt or shoes.
Jeffrey Hanson is 5-feet-5, 160 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes.
The white sailboat has a 6-inch red stripe along the side and the Washington ID number W N 6 7 5 3 N Z
