Fire destroys home near Kentridge High School

Fire investigators in Kent are talking to a person of interest in connection with a blaze that destroyed an abandoned house Thursday morning.

Kent Fire Department Deputy Fire Marshal Don Barberie couldn’t say whether investigators believe the fire was intentionally set, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters were called to the home near 124th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 209th Street around 4 a.m. on reports of fire with flames pouring through the roof, said Barberie.

“The first Kent unit that got there found the house fully involved, the fire was everywhere,” Barberie said.

Neighbors told fire crews the house had been abandoned for about a year, Barberie said. Because the home was abandoned, firefighters focused on protecting neighboring homes.

“Their main goal was to knock the fire down from the outside and protect the neighbor’s house,” Barberie said.

The house was destroyed. A damage estimate for the fire has not been released.
