Kent police seek witnesses to double homicide at gas station

Kent police are seeking additional witnesses to the Aug. 20 shooting at a Shell gas station that left two employees dead.

Detectives believe that there still are unidentified witnesses who may have firsthand knowledge of the shooting at the gas station at 6331 S.212th St. Killed in the shooting were gas station employees David Christianson and Carlos Gonzales.

Leland Russell Jr., 29, of Burien, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Kent police say Leland and a friend argued with others at the gas station, and the friend shoved Gonzales before Russell ran back to his car, grabbed his gun and shot both Christianson and Gonzales. The friend has not been arrested.

Russell apparently told investigators a group of construction workers had made racial slurs against him and his friend, prompting the shooting, but prosecutors say that witnesses did not corroborate his account.

Police ask that anyone who witnessed the shooting, or the events leading up to it, call 911 or the department’s tip line at 253-856-5808.
