Man wounded in bank robbery attempt leaves hospital

TACOMA — Police say a Parkland, Pierce County, man charged with attempted first-degree robbery in a holdup attempt at a suburban Tacoma bank has been released from a hospital and booked into the Pierce County Jail.

Prosecutors say 27-year-old Michael David Winston II was hospitalized after getting shot five times in the head, torso and leg by an armored car guard on Sept. 15 at a Bank of America branch in Lakewood.

Lakewood police Lt. Chris Lawler says Winston was moved Monday.

Charging papers say Winston confronted the guard in the breezeway of the bank and pointed a gun at him while demanding money. The guard fired, wounding Winston.

His wife, 26-year-old Brittney Winston, is accused of driving a stolen getaway vehicle. She has pleaded not guilty to the same charge.
