Suspect arrested in Wednesday’s fatal shooting in Pioneer Square

Police in Federal Way have arrested a suspect in last week’s fatal shooting in Seattle’s Pioneer Square.

The 19-year-old man was arrested early Tuesday morning, according to Seattle police. He has been booked into the King County Jail for investigation of homicide.

The victim, Melvin V. “TayTay” Dees, 22, was shot several times near Yesler Way and the Second Avenue Extension South around 10:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said Dees was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he later died.

Witnesses told police they saw two men, both wearing hooded sweatshirts, running from the scene of the shooting. Several witnesses attempted to follow the men as they fled but lost them, police said.

One of the bullets fired at the victim traveled across the street and hit Seattle’s historic Smith Tower.

An employee of an Internet marketing agency in the Smith Tower said it was “very unsettling” to learn that a stray bullet had gone through a ground-floor window.

“It’s pretty terrifying, though, because I’m realizing where a bullet went across is where I walk every day to the bus tunnel,” said Timothy Johnson, who works on the 17th floor.

This post will be updated.
