Dr. Mary L. “Nora” Disis, a cancer researcher and professor of medicine in oncology at the University of Washington, has been named editor-in-chief of JAMA Network’s new journal, JAMA Oncology, which will launch next year.

Disis, 55, who specializes in breast and ovarian cancer and immunotherapy, is associate dean of translational science in the UW School of Medicine. She directs the Institute of Translational Health Science and the Center for Translational Medicine in Women’s Health.

Disis has been deputy editor for translational oncology for the Journal of Clinical Oncology and is on the advisory board for Science Translational Medicine.

Thomas Easley, publisher of JAMA and the JAMA Network, said in a statement that the new journal will serve physicians “engaged in both advancing the science and practice of oncology at a critical time for the field.”

JAMA Oncology is the group’s first new journal in many years, said Dr. Howard Bauchner, editor-in-chief of JAMA and the JAMA Network, in a statement. “And we could not be more fortunate than to have Nora Disis as our inaugural editor-in-chief. She is an internationally renowned investigator and a superb clinician.”

The new journal will help keep scientists and clinicians up to date on research and viewpoints in oncology, Disis said in a statement. “Our clinical education content will keep practitioners current and set a strong foundation for trainees to begin the practice of oncology.”
