Body of missing boater found near Herron Island

Updated at 4:27 p.m.: The body of the missing man has been found near Herron Island in Case Inlet, the Pierce County sheriff’s office said in a tweet.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has taken custody of the body.

OLYMPIA  — A dive team from the Thurston County sheriff’s office and vessels from other agencies searched Budd Inlet Sunday for an Olympia man missing after a sailboat capsized Saturday during a race in stormy weather.

Two other people aboard the 22-foot sailboat were rescued.

Sheriff’s Capt. Greg Elwin tells The Olympian 46-year-old Jay Bergland was missing after the boat sank in about 70 feet of water near Olympia.
