Federal Way student seriously hurt after being hit by school bus

Update 11:10 a.m.

A Federal Way girl who was hit by a school bus carrying elementary students at the intersection of Pacific Highway South and South 308th Street is in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center.

The girl had just left her home and was in the crosswalk when she was struck, said Federal Way police Cmdr. Stan McCall.

Deb Stenberg, spokeswoman for Federal Way Public Schools, said the girl was struck by a district-run bus. She said the bus was carrying students from nearby Nautilus Elementary School.

The bus driver is on administrative leave, which is the normal procedure when crashes occur, Stenberg said.

“We don’t know the circumstances of this accident. The safety of our kids is the highest priority, our bus drivers undergo a significant amount of┬átraining before they’re put in charge of a bus,” said Stenberg. “The district will have counselors at Federal Way High School, at the transportation department to talk to bus drivers and at the elementary to speak with the students on the bus.”
