Food left cooking on stove causes fire that injures 3 in Kent

Three people were injured and four families displaced by an apartment fire in Kent early Friday.

In a news release, the Kent Fire Department said firefighters were called a little after midnight to the 1600 block of Maple Lane in the Kent Valley.  When they arrived, they found a first-floor apartment ablaze and three injured people in the parking lot who were treated, then taken to a nearby hospital.

Firefighters extinguished the fire in about 30 minutes.  One apartment had fire and water damage, and some neighboring units received smoke and heat damage.

Investigators said the cause of the fire was food left cooking on a stove unattended.  Damage was estimated at about $250,000.
