PORTLAND — A 16-year-old homeless girl has been banned from Portland streetcars for 90 days for bringing aboard a pit bull that killed another dog.
The Oregonian reported Monday that officials are starting an education campaign about dogs on the downtown streetcars: Unless they’re service animals as defined by federal law, they have to be in secure containers.
The girl hasn’t been named.
The dog was harnessed and leashed Sept. 24 when she got on the streetcar. It bit down on the head of a 13-year-old Pomeranian and killed it.
The pit bull is at an animal shelter for evaluation and a decision about whether it can be adopted or placed with a pit bull rescue group.
If it remains in the community it’ll have to be muzzled and kept securely.
