Man sentenced to 4 years in prison for torching apartments at WSU

The Seattle Times

PULLMAN — A man who admitted setting a fire that destroyed portions of a student apartment complex under construction at Washington State University will spend more than four years in federal prison.

A federal judge on Tuesday sentenced 33-year-old Bryan Lee Kitchen for starting the fire that burned 88 units at The Grove apartment complex on July 14, 2013, causing more than $4 million in damages.

The Spokesman-Review reports that Kitchen in court apologized for setting the fire. He says he was drunk when he set the blaze.

Kitchen, who was a worker on the construction site, was also ordered to pay $4.7 million in restitution.

Kitchen pleaded guilty in January to a single count of maliciously using fire to damage a building used in interstate commerce.
