A 19-year-old man was charged Thursday with first-degree murder in connection with last week’s fatal shooting in Seattle’s Pioneer Square.

Kenneth Bernard Jones Jr. is accused of shooting Melvin V. “TayTay” Dees, 22, several times near Yesler Way and Second Avenue Extension South around 10:40 a.m. Sept. 24. Dees was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he later died.

One of the bullets fired at Dees traveled across the street and hit Seattle’s historic Smith Tower.

Witnesses identified Jones as the shooter, according to charging papers. He was arrested Tuesday in Federal Way.

His last-known address was in Corpus Christi, Texas, charging documents said.

The documents do not give a motive for the shooting.

Jones is being held in the King County Jail in lieu of $2 million bail.
