EUGENE, Ore.— A family in the town of Noti, 20 miles west of Eugene, has been told they have to quarantine their cats for six months or kill them because they played with a dead bat that tested positive for rabies.
Lane County Public Health says the family found the cats playing with the bat Oct. 3 in a barn.
KVAL reports an Oregon State University lab on Tuesday confirmed the bat had rabies. The cats are not vaccinated against the disease.
So far this year nine animals have been found with rabies in Oregon: seven bats and two foxes
