Prison investigates apparent suicide of Shelton inmate

The Associated Press

OLYMPIA — The state Department of Corrections says officials are investigating the apparent suicide of a 31-year-old inmate at Washington Corrections Center in Shelton.

Nicholas White was found hanging in his cell Thursday morning.

According to a news release from the agency, White’s cell mate alerted staff during recreation time that White had been acting strange. When staff went to check on him at about 10 a.m., they found him hanging. Medical staff was unable to revive him.

White, who was serving a 12-month sentence on a firearm charge, was scheduled to be released on April 1.

The department says that no foul play is suspected, but that prison administrators and the Mason County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death.
