A South Seattle grandfather is believed to have killed his daughter and granddaughter on Monday night after being confronted about allegedly sexually abusing the 11-year-old girl, according to Seattle police.
The grandfather, identified by sources as Honorario Yango, 78, then killed himself.
A source close to the investigation said Wednesday that the girl, Anahlia Cowherd, 11, had blogged about the abuse on Wattpad, a digital storytelling site. When the girl’s mother learned of the abuse, she confronted her father. He then shot the mother and daughter before taking his own life in their Rainier Beach home.
The source said the man also tried to kill his 10-year-old grandson, but the boy managed to escape and call police. The boy is being cared for by extended family.
Police spokesman Sgt. Sean Whitcomb confirmed Wednesday that detectives are investigating sexual abuse as a motive for the shootings.
“The investigation is still very preliminary. In speaking with the case detectives, we are looking at a possible motive that is related to sexual abuse of the 11-year-old victim by the shooter,” said Whitcomb.
The source identified the slain girl’s mother as Christine Dela Isla, 39.
On Tuesday, Mia Williams, the principal at Aki Kurose Middle School, sent a letter to parents, notifying them that a student at the school was killed Monday night, along with her mother and grandfather. The school is about 3½ miles north of the family’s home.
“Any time a child is murdered it shakes up the community and deeply impacts our first responders,” Whitcomb said. “We’re committed to doing everything we can to getting answers for surviving family members.”
