Ferry service to Southworth in Kitsap County was halted shortly after 6 p.m. Friday after a man drove past the ticket terminals, down a long drive, through a barricade and off the dock.

Witnesses told police the man, who was driving a newer Ford Escape, did

not brake before going into the water, according to Washington State Patrol Sgt. Pete Stock.

A Seattle Fire Department spokesman said one of its dive teams retrieved the unconscious man from the car, which police said was in water 30 to 60 feet deep.

Stock said life saving measures were attempted but the man did not survive.

Stock said suicide was being investigated as a possibility.

Originally, officials said the Southworth was down for the night, but Washington State Ferries Capt. Pete Williams said around 10 p.m. that ferry service would likely resume after the car was pulled from the water, possibly around midnight.
