Teen struck by school bus in Federal Way still in critical condition

A Federal Way girl who was hit by a school bus carrying elementary students on Thursday remained in critical condition Friday morning at Harborview Medical Center, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The girl had just left her home and was in the crosswalk when she was struck at the intersection of Pacific Highway South and South 308th Street around 7:45 a.m., according to Federal Way police.

Deb Stenberg, spokeswoman for Federal Way Public Schools, told The Times on Thursday that the girl was struck by a district-run bus. She said the bus was carrying students from nearby Nautilus Elementary School.

The bus driver is on administrative leave, which is the normal procedure when crashes occur, Stenberg said.

“We don’t know the circumstances of this accident. The safety of our kids is the highest priority, our bus drivers undergo a significant amount of training before they’re put in charge of a bus,” said Stenberg.
