Boater rescued on Lake Washington, used cell phone to get help

A 57-year-old man was rescued from a capsized pedal boat in Lake Washington on Saturday afternoon, after he called for help from his cell phone.

Seattle police and fire crews responded to the overturned boat at 12:30 p.m., Seattle Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore said. The phone was in an airtight case.

The man was not wearing a life jacket or any type of wet suit and spent about 20 minutes in the water before he was pulled out and taken to Harborview Medical Center.

“He was hypothermic,” Moore said. “Stable, but very cold.”

Moore said the water was very rough, and the National Weather Service reported waves of 2 to 3 feet. Wind speeds are 20 mph around Lake Washington with gusts up to 35 mph, meteorologist Chris Burke said.
