ANCHORAGE — Alaska State Troopers say a hunter killed two bears after one of the animals attacked his friend.
Troopers say the Coast Guard reported the attack Tuesday afternoon. KTUU-TV reports 68-year-old Sitka resident Michael Snowden had been attacked by a brown bear while hunting on Sally Island, about 30 miles west of Kodiak in the east arm of Uganik Bay.
His hunting partner, 38-year-old Jeff Ostrin of Camas, Clark County, killed the bear during the attack, then killed another bear that appeared while the two men waited for help.
A Coast Guard helicopter took Snowden to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center, where he was treated for leg injuries.
Troopers say an investigation determined it was a sow with two large cubs that attacked Snowden.
