After temporary closures of Chinook and Cayuses passes over the weekend, the Washington State Department of Transportation has decided to keep the passes closed for the season as of Monday.
WSDOT also has closed the North Cascades Highway (Highway 20) for the season after two more feet of snow fell Sunday and Monday.
The avalanche risk is too great to allow traffic to safely cross Chinook Pass on State Route 410 and Cayuse Pass on State Route 123, theWSDOT said in a release.
Approximately three feet of snow fell on the passes over the weekend.
Chinook Pass, elevation 5,430 feet, is closed from Crystal Mountain Boulevard, about 12 miles northwest of the summit, to Morse Creek, five miles east of the summit.
WSDOT typically closes Chinook and Cayuse passes in- late-November. Dangers include avalanche, mountainous terrain and a lack of cell phone service.
