Christmas tree-cutting permits available for national forest

Permits to cut Christmas trees in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest will be available through Dec. 24, according to a news release from the U.S. Forest Service.

The permits cost $10 for trees up to 12 feet and $20 for taller trees. They come with a map and information about cutting areas within forest lands in the eastern parts of King, Snohomish, Pierce, Skagit and Whatcom counties.

People cutting their own trees should plan to buy a parking permit if they will be parking in a designated Sno-Park lot. It is also advisable to get a tree early because access to the trees is via narrow mountain roads that are not plowed after it snows. Such roads often require high-clearance vehicles with tire chains and a shovel. Road and weather information is available here.

Permits can be purchased at the Outdoor Recreation Information Center at the REI store in downtown Seattle and at the REI at Alderwood Mall — though those locations sell only the $10 permits.
