Man shot by Yakima deputy had criminal record

YAKIMA — The driver of a stolen car who was fatally shot by a Yakima sheriff’s deputy after a chase has been identified as a 27-year-old Naches man, Anthony Laviolette.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports he had pleaded guilty last month to obstructing a police officer and making burglary tools and served 10 days in jail. His record includes a 2008 theft conviction for stealing studded tires from a home.

Wednesday’s incident began with a reported bicycle theft.

When deputies attempted to pull over a car connected with the theft it sped away at more than 100 mph on Highway 12 until it went out of control and crashed into a fence.

Deputies were approaching when they say the driver tried to run down a deputy. Laviolette was shot multiple times.
