Mercer Island home heavily damaged in fire

A fire that broke out in a gazebo spread through a Mercer Island home early Sunday morning, causing extensive damage.

Fire officials said they received a 911 call about 6 a.m. from a home in the 4300 block of East Mercer Way. Firefighters arrived to find the attached gazebo in flames and the fire spreading through the top story and attic of a two-story home, said Shawn Matheson, battalion chief for the Mercer Island Fire Department.

The family was at home and was able to safely evacuate, said Matheson.

He said that the home was located on a long, steep driveway with limited access for fire trucks.

Water damage was extensive and the roof will likely need replacing, he said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
