Cuffed for class? Man runs into high school to avoid arrest

A man who had pulled up at Kentwood High School on Friday morning to drop off a relative made a dash for class himself after he was stopped by police.

The man was stopped by King County sheriff’s deputies outside the Covington school for investigation of reckless driving, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. DB Gates. Once officers ran his name and realized he was wanted for driving with a suspended license, the cuffs were clamped on, but the man then took off running for the school, Gates said.

Kent School District spokesman Chris Loftis told KOMO-TV that as the school went into lockdown because of the police activity, the man managed to get inside. The man placed a coat over his handcuffs in an apparent attempt to blend in, Loftis told the television station.

School security cameras followed the man as he went into an office and sat down. School resource officers checked cameras and after finding the intruder, he was turned over to deputies.

“It was over in 15 minutes,” Gates said.

The man also is being investigated for alleged drug possession. Gates said he dropped some drugs after being confronted by deputies outside the school.

Gates did not identify the man, other than to say he is an adult.
