Gunfire reported near Rainier Beach elementary school

Seattle police say they have increased patrols around Emerson Elementary School, in Rainier Beach, after staff reported hearing gunfire early Wednesday.

According to police, staff and students at the school at 9709 60th Ave. S. went into “shelter-in-place” status around 6:30 a.m. after hearing gunfire. Students and staff were there for pre-school programs, according to Seattle Public Schools.

“Witnesses reported seeing a gold vehicle — with its alarm sounding and lights flashing — and a second vehicle, possibly a Dodge, fleeing the scene,” police wrote in a news release. “Officers searched the neighborhood and found shell casings about a block from the school, but did not locate and victims or damage.”

There were no reports of injury.

Police said they do not believe the school or students were targeted.
