Pierce County deputies kill armed homicide suspect

The Associated Press

PARKLAND, Wash. — Pierce County sheriff’s detectives have shot and killed a homicide suspect they say fired at them when they confronted him in the hallway of an apartment building.

Spokesman Ed Troyer says it started about 2 a.m. Wednesday when a 23-year-old man was fatally shot at the Woodmark apartments.

About an hour later, the detectives responded to a report that a man matching the suspect’s description was trying to enter units at the nearby Drake apartments.

Troyer says before the detectives had a chance to say anything, the man pulled out a gun and fired a shot. Both detectives returned fire. The 21-year-old man died at the scene.

Troyer says the initial shooting apparently was the result of a fight over a drug deal.
