Seattle man dies in waters off Hawaii’s Big Island

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii — An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death of a 53-year-old Seattle man found unresponsive off Hawaii’s Big Island.

West Hawaii Today reports David Green Thompson was found Sunday morning in waters off Wailea Beach in South Kohala.

He had been swimming about 150 yards off shore and was spotted motionless in the water.

A kayaker carried him to shore.

Hawaii County Fire Department say lifeguards and bystanders performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Thompson, who was experiencing cardiac arrest that may have been brought on by drowning.

He was pronounced dead Sunday night at Kona Community Hospital.
