Major backup on NB I-5 near Des Moines caused by earlier accident

All lanes are open now, but an 8-mile backup has been reported on northbound I-5 at State Route 516 near Des Moines, due to an earlier accident. Find alternate routes.

The accident occurred in the southbound lanes, but required repairs to the median, that blocked lanes in both directions for a period of time.

At around 2:30 a.m., a  silver BMW sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed, hit the guard rail and  burst into flames, said Trooper Dominic Ledesma of the Washington State Patrol.

When emergency responders arrived at the scene, the driver and any passengers could not be found. Authorities continue to investigate.
