Salem, Ore., police investigate cat poisonings

The Associated Press

SALEM, Ore. — Police in Salem, Ore. say they have interviewed a person of interest in a case of suspected antifreeze poisoning that has killed at least eight cats.

Lt. Steve Birr says the first cat began showing signs of poisoning on Friday evening and the most recent fatality happened Monday.

An animal hospital in Keizer is performing necropsies on the dead cats. Initial testing on three of them has been positive for the presence of antifreeze.

While Birr says police don’t expect additional poisonings, he says the investigation continues. The spokesman also cautions pet owners in the vicinity of 6th and Rosemont Northwest to watch their dogs and cats for any sign of illness.
