Thousands of people braved the below-freezing temperatures to celebrate the new year at Seattle Center, where, as they have been for decades, fireworks were set off from the Space Needle.

Crews had installed several thousand pyrotechnic shots on the Space Needle earlier this week for the eight-minute New Year’s show that began at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday. An estimated 400,000 people watched the fireworks from surrounding neighborhoods and a half-million tuned in to the fireworks broadcast on KING 5.
