The Pasco City Council has released the following statement on Tuesday’s shooting by police of Antonio Zambrano-Montes:
The Pasco City Council shares in the Pasco community’s concern over the incident on Tuesday and wants the community to know the Council is committed to a full and fair investigation. To that end, the City had previously entered into an agreement with the cities of Richland and Kennewick, along with Benton and Franklin Counties for the purpose of establishing a Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The SIU is charged with conducting a thorough and objective investigation of officer involved incidents and to forward the results of their investigation to the County Prosecutor for his review and determination.
From the Council’s perspective, we want the same thing from the process as the hundreds of others from Pasco (and around the nation) that have weighed in on social media: an objective and thorough investigation that is completed as quickly as possible without compromising the integrity of the work.
The Council remains committed to the Pasco Police Department’s community-based style of policing, which has dramatically reduced the crime rate in Pasco over the last twenty-five years, and that keeping Pasco safe requires a strong partnership between law enforcement and the community.
The City of Pasco strives to continue improving the quality of community life in Pasco.
