Update Sunday 2:20 p.m.: The cause of a bus crash late Saturday involving a basketball team from King’s High School, a private Christian school in Shoreline, was still under investigation Sunday, Washington State Patrol Trooper Mark Francis said. The State Patrol reported the driver, identified as Deborah J. Clark, 53, of Everett, attributed the accident on Highway 104 to brake failure, but a State Patrol inspection found the brakes were functioning properly, Francis said. The newspaper’s attempts to contact her Sunday were unsuccessful.
The State Patrol said the bus was equipped with a video camera, and troopers are reviewing the video.
The stretch of highway was closed from 10 p.m. Saturday until 4:30 a.m. Sunday.
The bus flipped over at 10:20 p.m. and crashed, just west of Interstate 5. Francis said 10 of the 16 occupants suffered minor injuries, such as lacerations. Ten people were taken to Seattle area hospitals for observation, including Clark, Francis said. None of the injuries was life-threatening, he said.
The team, including three coaches, was headed home from Mount Vernon to Shoreline when the crashed occurred, Francis said. The team had just played Mount Vernon High School, winning 74-63 for the District 1A title. According to Francis, the bus was attempting merge onto 104 when it hit the curb and flipped over.
