Sex offender performs at Benton County school assembly

The Associated Press

BENTON CITY, Wash. — A registered sex offender performed at a high school assembly in southeast Washington though she’s not allowed to be where minors congregate.

Benton County Sheriff’s Detective Mike Wilson says Melissa Salsbury turned herself into authorities a day after Tuesday’s assembly at Kiona-Benton City High School. A jail roster shows she was booked into Benton County Jail Wednesday afternoon.

The Tri-City Herald says Salsbury was convicted in 2011 and sentenced to nearly a year in jail for her role in forcing underage girls to work as prostitutes.

Superintendent Wade Haun said in a statement that school administrators had not cleared her in advance to speak.

Salsbury performed with a group of musicians who shared inspiring messages about overcoming negativity, peer pressure and other issues. A spokesman for that group says it was not aware she was a sex offender.
