UPDATED, 12:30 p.m. | Highway 2 in Monroe remains closed at Fryelands Blvd. (milepost 12) due to a fatal collision, Trooper Travis Shearer said.
A Hyundai passenger car traveling eastbound appears to have crossed the centerline and hit another vehicle in the westbound lane, Shearer said. The second car was knocked into the eastbound lane and was then hit by an eastbound pick-up at the same time the car hit the guardrail.
The male driver of the second car was killed in the accident, he said.
The female driver of the Hyundai was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Shearer said. The driver and passenger in the pick-up were not injured.
A fourth car avoided the accident, but side-swiped the guardrail, according to Shearer.
The State Patrol expects to open the highway within the next hour.
