MIDLAND, Pierce County(AP) — A man was arrested and a church was destroyed after three fires were set in Pierce County early Thursday.
A 30-year-old man is in custody after officers caught him attempting to break into a house near where the three fires were set, said Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer.
The man was leaving the area when fire crews arrived and they got a good look at him, Troyer said. He says they think the man was attempting to hide from authorities when he was caught breaking into an occupied home.
Troyer says fires also were set to a car and an abandoned house. Initial estimates of the damage to the church are a $1 million.
The suspect was being interviewed by detectives. The fires broke out after midnight Thursday.

The Everett Police Department is investigating two suspicious fires as possible arsons.
Just before 4 a.m. Saturday, Everett Police and Everett Fire responded to reports of a fire in the 1500 block of W. Casino Rd. Local residents were putting out the fire, which caused minimal structural damage and no injuries, Everett Police said in a news release.
Just before 5 a.m., police and fire crews responded to a second fire, in the 8600 block of 18th Ave W. That blaze caused substantial structure damage to the exterior of an apartment building but no injuries, according to the news release.
Arson detectives were called in but at that point did not believe the two fires are connected. The news release said that in both fires, local residents quickly called 911 and began fighting the blazes, preventing what could have been substantially more damage.
