Armed man found dead in Bellevue park; Main Street reopened

UPDATE 9 a.m.:

An armed man was found dead inside a downtown Bellevue park this morning. Police say it is likely it is the suicidal man they were searching for.

Bellevue police spokeswoman Carla Iafrate said on Twitter “armed suspect found dead in Wilburton Park.”

Police have been searching for the suicidal man for more than nine hours. A portion of Main Street that had been closed during the search is back open, police said.

SWAT teams and dozens of police officers remain in downtown Bellevue this morning after a report of a possibly armed suicidal man surfaced last night, prompting the closure of a stretch of Main Street and two nearby parks.

Police were called to Wilburton Hill Park, 12400 Main St., and the nearby Bellevue Botanical Garden around 11:30 p.m. because of a report of a man threatening to kill himself. When en route to the 911 call, there was a report of gunshots in the area of the parks, said police spokeswoman Carla Iafrate. After police arrived in the area they heard more gunfire and believed they were being shot at. Nobody was hurt.

Bellevue’s SWAT team, as well as SWAT officers from other police departments, and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office helicopter were dispatched to search for the man. Nobody has seen the man, or made contact with him, since last night, Iafrate said.

Iafrate added that the search had been difficult in the dark and that they’re hoping for better results this morning. Police know who the suicidal man is; Iafrate did not have any details on whether police have previously contacted the man.

As police continue their search Main Street, from 118th Avenue Southeast to 124th Avenue Southeast, is closed. The city of Bellevue has also closed Kelsey Creek Park, which is a few blocks away, as well.

A reverse 911 call went out this morning alerting Bellevue residents to the police activity and asking them to stay out of the parks, Iafrate said. A reverse 911 system allows dispatchers to call residents in specific geographic areas
