Teen shot at Bothell FDA lab released from custody
A teenage boy who was shot in the foot after he allegedly drove a car into a contract security guard at the Food and Drug Administration lab in Bothell on Feb. 8 is out of juvenile detention, according to Snohomish County prosecuting attorneys.
He has not been charged with a crime in connection with the incident and prosecutors said they will wait until an investigation into the shooting has been completed by the Snohomish Multi-Agency Response Team before making a charging decision.
According to Bothell police, the boy was shot around 7 a.m. after he was confronted by two armed guards who provide security to the FDA lab through a contract with the Homeland Security’s Federal Protective Service.
Police said the guards first reported that they were contacting a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot. The guards said the teen fled, then returned for the car and hit at least one of them while he was backing up, according to police. At least one of the guards fired, striking the boy in the foot, according to Shari Ireton, a spokeswoman for the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
The 15-year-old then drove away, got into a separate hit-and-run accident and drove home, police said. He was tracked down via information on the vehicle relayed by the guards, police said.
The teen, who was a student at Secondary Academy for Success, an alternative high school near cthe FDA building, was taken into custody and booked into the Denney Juvenile Justice Center on investigation of second-degree assault on Friday.
Officials have not yet said whether both guards fired their weapons, how many shots were fired, nor why the teen was driving a car.

UPDATE: Teen shot in foot during incident at FDA lab in Bothell
UPDATE AT 4:31 P.M.: The 15-year-old boy has been booked into the Denney Juvenile Justice Center in Everett for investigation of second-deree assault, the Sheriff’s Office says.
ORIGINAL POST: A 15-year-old boy was shot in the foot after the car he was driving struck a security guard at a Food and Drug Administration lab in Bothell Friday morning, according to police.
The boy was treated at a Kirkland hospital and is being questioned by police.
According to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, at around 7 a.m., a private security guard contracted with the federal government to provide protection to the FDA lab, 22215 26th Ave. S.E., approached a suspicious person in the parking lot. The person fled on foot, then returned a short time later and got into a vehicle parked at the facility.
As the guards approached the vehicle, the suspect backed out and the vehicle struck one of the guards, the Sheriff’s Office said. The guards fired at the vehicle.
The boy drove toward his home, Bothell police Capt. Denise Langford said. On the way, he was involved in a hit-and-run accident in which his vehicle struck an occupied car near 527th Street and 228th Avenue Southeast, Langford said.
Bothell police tracked the vehicle to a nearby home, where they found a 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound in the foot and minor facial wounds. The boy was taken into custody and to Evergreen Hospital Medical Center for treatment.
The FDA laboratory, called the Pacific Regional Lab Northwest, analyzes samples of products for safety and compliance with regulations.
The teen is a student at the Secondary Academy for Success, an alternative high school adjacent to the FDA building, said Northshore School District spokeswoman Leanna Albrecht. The school was in a modified lockdown while some students were questioned by police.
The school and the FDA building are separated by a fence, and there’s no history of problems between students and the FDA, Albrecht said.
The Snohomish County Multi-Agency Response Team will be leading the investigation in partnership with the Department of Homeland Security.
Jacqueline C. Yost, spokeswoman for Federal Protective Services, a division of Homeland Security, issued the following statement on the incident:
“The Federal Protective Services (FPS) is aware of a shooting today involving an individual and two FPS contracted Protective Security Officers at the Food and Drug Administration … The suspect has been apprehended and is in custody. FPS is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident.”
