The Airlane motel in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood — a place police say is a notorious magnet for robbery, rape and domestic violence — has been declared a “chronic nuisance property.”
According to the Seattle Police Department, that means the motel’s owner will have to address the business’ problems or else face fines of up to $25,000 or business-license revocation.
Last year, officers arrested 18 people at the motel and responded to 911 calls 46 times for incidents that included a man strangling his pregnant girlfriend, according to the SPD Blotter.
The department has required the motel’s owner to install security cameras inside and outside the building, secure the building’s doors, hire licensed security guards, kick out trespassers, enforce a zero-tolerance narcotics policy for motel guests, keep better records of guests staying at the motel, and post signs around the motel discouraging crime.
It isn’t easy declaring a property a chronic nuisance property, according to SPD.
“If you do feel that you do have a nuisance property in your neighborhood, contact your precinct’s Community Police Team, and be ready to articulate why the business or residence is a problem for you and your community,” said Lt. John Hayes in an SPD Blotter item.
