A taxi driver in Auburn was killed in a collision Friday morning after an SUV ran a red light and broadsided the cab, Auburn police said.
The collision happened at 5:50 a.m. at the corner of Auburn Way South and East Main Street.
Auburn Police Commander Mike Hirman said the taxi had just begun moving through the intersection on a green light and was heading east on East Main Street when an SUV with two people inside ran a red light and crashed into the side of the taxi. The driver, who was the only person in the cab, died at the scene.
Hirman said neither of the SUV occupants was seriously injured and the SUV’s driver got out of the vehicle and ran off. He was found a couple of blocks away.
Hirman said an Auburn police officer was one car ahead of the taxi and saw the accident in his rear-view mirror.
The driver of the SUV is being held and police are looking into whether alcohol or drugs were involved.

The driver of a speeding red pickup that caused a four-car collision in Auburn today is dead, according to police.
The accident happened around 10:45 this morning after a man in his 20s drove the pickup past several cars on a grassy shoulder of C Street Southwest. As the northbound truck veered left back onto the roadway near Highway 18, it went across all three northbound lanes and into southbound traffic.
The truck hit two southbound vehicles before it rolled onto its top. Another southbound vehicle crashed into the mess.
The pickup driver died at the scene, according to the Auburn police. Others involved in the collision escaped without serious injuries.
Police said there was no evidence at the scene indicating drugs or alcohol were involved. But because of his erratic driving, the King County Medical Examiner’s Office will investigate whether either played a role in his death, said Auburn Police Cmdr. Mike Hirman.
The accident closed roads in the area for hours.
