GRANTS PASS, Ore. — Authorities say 11 inmates rioted at a youth prison in Southern Oregon, taking over a portion of the Rogue Valley Youth Correctional Facility in Grants Pass for several hours.
Superintendent Ken Jerin told the Grants Pass Daily Courier (http://bit.ly/19vEFPS ) that one guard had to barricade himself in an office Sunday night until police and guards regained control. Two other guards backed out and locked down the quadrant.
Jerin says two SWAT teams and negotiators were called in, and the last youth gave up shortly after midnight. A day room was “trashed,” but no one was seriously injured.
During the incident, someone identifying himself as an inmate called The Grants Pass Daily Courier and said there was a riot.
Jerin said the cause of the riot was under investigation.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. — When a man broke into a Grants Pass house over the weekend, a 14-year-old girl went into a drill she’d practiced with her family:
Get a description. Call 911. Hide.
Police say the man knocked on the front door and rang the doorbell Saturday morning, and then pulled a screen from the window to get in.
Meanwhile, the girl gave the 911 dispatcher what was described as a detailed description of the man and then retreated to a closet with her 12-year-old brother. She stayed on the call.
Ninety seconds later, the Grants Pass Daily Courier reported, police officers arrived.
Police detained 25-year-old Brandon W. Weeks of no permanent address as he left the property and booked him on charges of burglary, criminal mischief and probation violation.
