LAKEWOOD, Pierce County (AP) — Neighbors say the older couple killed in an apartment fire in Washington were a woman who was ill and her husband, who originally escaped the flames but went back in to save her.
The blaze happened about 1 a.m. Wednesday in Lakewood.
Neighbors say the woman had been sick and was unable to move around. They told reporters at the scene the man had escaped the flames but went back inside.
West Pierce Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Hallie McCurdy says arriving firefighters quickly knocked down the flames and found the bodies.
McCurdy says the fire started in the apartment’s living room but the exact cause hasn’t been determined.
The Red Cross is helping a half-dozen residents in other apartments that had smoke damage.

TACOMA — The driver of a car that crashed while fleeing a Tacoma convenience store with stolen beer pleaded guilty Thursday to vehicular homicide for the wreck that killed two friends.
Nineteen-year-old Raymond Joseph Lewis was sentenced to three years in prison at an emotional hearing with nearly 100 people in the Pierce County courtroom.
Lewis also pleaded guilty to attempting to elude police July 31 when he lost control of his car. The crash killed 22-year-old James Paggeot and 21-year-old Walter Corey.
The News Tribune reports the mother of one of the victims, Janice Paggeot, asked the judge for leniency. She said Lewis is a good person who made a mistake that should not ruin the rest of his life.
