UW Election Eye 2012

Campaign 2012 through the eyes of UW faculty and students

June 14, 2012 at 6:45 AM

The return of pop culture: “Obama Boy” has a crush on President

A youtube video of a passionate Barack Obama fan, self-identifying as “Obama Boy,” signals the return of popular culture as a creative force in presidential politics.

Just over a month ago, President Barack Obama announced that he personally supports same-sex marriage. How this position will affect him in the election is unclear.

But we now know this: Obama Boy has a crush on him.

In the first epic pop culture moment of the 2012 campaign, a Brooklyn-based guy has taken to Youtube to proclaim that he has a crush on the president. “Obama Boy” is a satirical — though seemingly heart-felt, judging by the video — riff on the 2008 “Obama Girl,” who professed her adoration for Obama in a video that went viral online.

Obama Girl now says she isn’t sure she’ll even vote for the president this fall.

Obama Boy leaves no such doubt.

Obama Boy is Justin Brown, whose facebook page is here with regular updates on how he and the video’s producer, John Duarte, are entering the media bigtime. They uploaded “Obama Boy” on Sunday. Yesterday they were on Fox News and CNN. Today it looks like it will be on ABC and NBC. Next up is your email inbox — whichever side of this election you’re on.

The lyrics highlight the president’s “evolution” to support same-sex marriage.

Way back in 2008,
You just couldn’t relate.

Your evolution.
You’re my solution.

I put down my Prop 8 sign.
Now I’m gonna make you mine.
Progressive, caring, and kind.

It’s clever, it’s hip, it’s reminiscent of the vibe toward Obama the candidate in 2008, when every-girl Obama Girl — 29-year-old New Yorker Amber Lee Ettinger — was matched by the star power of Will.I.Am and friends in their “Yes We Can” video.

Pop cultural currents are hardly the stuff that determine an election, but it would be a mistake to suggest they don’t matter or mean anything.

NBC’s Saturday Night Live devastated Sarah Palin in 2008 with Tina Fey’s send-offs. In 2000 SNL destroyed Al Gore with a brutal first-debate mocking that was so tough the Gore campaign made its candidate sit down and watch how he was being lampooned.

Obama the 2012 candidate is going to need much more than Obama Boy the video or the voter. But the fact that there even is an Obama Boy is no small matter.
